The MG Car Club of South Australia has its clubrooms at 93 Chief Street Brompton. The Club was established in 1956 and has approximately 950 members. Our Aim is to promote the sport and pastime of motoring in all its branches and, in particular, to further the interest of owners and drivers of MG cars, including the preservation and conservation of the marque.

It is not a pre-requisite to own an MG, but you will find that most of our members own an MG of some description whether it be a currently registered vehicle, an historic registered vehicle, a restoration project or a prize winning concours car that only comes out occasionally. Some own two or three (or more) cars whilst others are looking to purchase. Some prefer pre-war vehicles, others like the MGB and some prefer the modern day Rover MGF TF or Z range. The Club has a variety of cars and members from all walks of life. The Club maintains registers of vehicles owned by its members.

One morning, Malcolm Caire met Ron Williams and Bob Brown in his office at Motors Limited, to discuss the formation of an MG Car Club. The inaugural meeting was advertised for 10th April 1956, at the Kinsway Building. Over 100 people turned up and voted to form the new club. Bob Brown was voted in as the first President, with Ron Williams as Secretary and Donn Shinners as Assistant Secretary. Inaugural Patron Charles Ellis wished the Club success and cautioned against the formation of cliques that would mar the promotion of club spirit and camaraderie. It was then decided to meet again in a month's time - the second Tuesday of the month which continues to this day. (Extract from Barry Bahnisch's book "Marque of Respect" published for the 50th Anniversary of the MG Car Club of South Australia - in 2006. An Honour Board, in our clubroom at Brompton, lists the names of the Inaugural Committee. One of the Founding members of the Committee, Ian Curwen-Walker is still a member of the current Committee. In early 1973, the Club began negotiations to acquire our own clubrooms and thanks to the foresight of those pioneering members, the MGCCSA continues to prosper in its current location at Brompton.

Each calendar year Annual awards are presented to members based on their attendance and participation at Club events. The winners are determined from records of attendance at Club events so please ensure that you write your name in the attendance book at each of the following events Breakfast Runs, Know Your MG Meetings & Register Meetings, and an attendance book is kept at the Clubrooms for Monthly General Meetings, Social, Competition, Working Bees, and other Club events which may be held.

Club Member of the Year

Objective:

To recognise the member who participated in the most club events during a calendar year. The ‘Club Member of the Year’ is recognised by receiving a trophy at the AGM, and their name on the ‘Club Member of the Year’ honour board. Remember to sign the attendance book or sign-on sheet at meetings of events.

Eligibility:

All financial members of the MG Car Club of SA are eligible to win the award.

Eligible Events:

Nominated events that are in the club calendar and are marked with a notation that attendance at this event attracts a point towards club member of the year. Additional events can be considered, event coordinators to notify Secretary of those events. (typical events to be included see table below) NOTE: events that limit the numbers of attending will not be counted towards ‘Club Member of the Year’

Calculation of points:

one point for each eligible event attended towards Club member of the year. These events to have ‘*’ or notation that attending this event attracts a point towards club member of the year. Event co-ordinators to keep a record of members attending the event. These records to be forwarded to the Secretary for calculation of points by the end of Jan. See table below for typical events for Club Member of the Year.

Club Motor Sport Champions

Awarded to the member who obtains the highest number of points in Club Motor sport at events indicated by ** in the club calendar. Points are awarded as follows: 1st. in class 3 points, 2nd in class 2 points, 3rd in class 1 point and all other placegetters. 1 bonus point is awarded for the fastest MG (MGCCSA Member)

Club Motor Sport Champion for 2017 - Rob Hall.

Points awarded as above, and the award presented to the lady obtaining the highest number of points. Originally introduced to encourage family participation in Motor sport.

Lady's Motorsport Club Champion for 2017 - Karen Stephenson.

 

Motor Sport Novice Award

Awarded to the highest placed Novice in motor sport.

Motor Sport Novice for 2017 - Nick Micklem.

 

Motor Sport Encouragement Award

Awarded to the member who regularly takes part in events and continues to improves on their performance - even if they are not a class winner.

The Knox Trophy (Tim Young Trophy)

First awarded in 1981 to the most consistent individual performance by a South Australian at a MG National Meeting in a single car/ driver combination.

How the points for the Knox Trophy are awarded: 6 points for 1st in class, 5 points for 2nd in class, 4 points for 3rd in class, 3 points for 4th in class, 2 points for 5th in class, 1 point for 6th in class plus one extra point for outright winner of the event.

The above is adopted provided there is a minimum of 6 drivers in the class. Where less than 6 drivers, points will decrease accordingly eg. 4 in class 1st = 4 points. An outright winner of an event will score the maximum of 6 points +1 points regardless of the number in class.

The Cup was once called the Mortlock Cup.
It was presented to the Port Lincoln Racing Club by the Mortlock family in the early 30’s.

The Cup was acquired by Tim Young in 1980 and presented to the MG Car Club, and is now known as the KNOX Trophy.
