On Sunday 18 February a small band of motorkhana enthusiasts gathered at the Mallala skidpan for round 1 of the SA Motorkhana Series.
Due to some changes to rules and costings for motorkhanas the CAMS Auto Test Panel had decided to make the 2018 series a state championship so there were a few regulation subtleties which had to be dealt with to get the day under way. MGCCSA was running the event so we had a lot to learn very quickly.
A small team was on hand to get set up including members of the Panel and other clubs but thanks to Dave, Tim, Alan Cardnell, Bev Waters, Peter Coulson, Jason and Faye Edwards and Murray for the setup. Pack was further aided by the rest of the Edwards clan, Michelle, Tyler and Aiden. Great work.
The field of twenty three drivers included four MGCCSA members and most notably Faye Edwards having her debut run in the TD prior to Easter. Faye did a great job all day taking out only one flag and having a great time.
After the first two runs the clouds delivered a gentle shower which persisted for the remainder of the day making for slippery conditions.
The series may be called a State Championship but is no different to what we have run before. It’s the same people doing the same tests and having fun at the same price. Come and have a go.
A great time was had by all and we look forward to the next round at Mallala on 29 April.
Sunday 7 May was a fine and clear day for some good fun motorsport at the Peter Hall Memorial Six Hour Regularity.
This event was a pet project of Peter Hall and it is great to see it run again with a full field of twenty six teams. The event is well run by the MSCA and teams regularly come from Victoria and Deniliquin to compete.
Team Emgee this year consisted of Rob Hall as Team Manager, Drivers John Davies (Toyota 86), Dean Hosking (Toyota 86), Jason Edwards (Lotus Elise), Murray Stephenson (Honda Civic) and Chris Hunt (Clubman). Again, not one MG to be seen.
Chris has been a regular competitor with MGCC in the past and it was great to see him back after an absence. His Clubman was a recent purchase and much of his practice time was learning how it worked. Sadly, not one MG in the team!
Our expert support crew consisted of Faye Edwards, Rob Hall, Dick & Jamie Manning, Michael Bugg, Curley, Leigh Harris and Tim Edmonds who was working as a scrutineer and supporter.
A grid of twenty six teams entered with a number of Victorian teams and included a variety of cars from old sports cars, clubman's, sedan's, some registered and some race cars. For many teams this is the only time we see their cars so it is entertaining getting used to the drivers and vehicles.
As with 2016 a swarm of Hyundai Excels turned up and Scott Stephenson, an MGCC member, had put together a team including his Bathurst conquering Excel, Helen Stephenson’s, a Honda Integra, a Barina and an HQ Holden. They finished ninth due to some mechanical issues.
The objective of the Regularity event is for a team of up to six cars and drivers to carry a sash for six hours and score as many laps as they can within certain timing guidelines. Based on the drivers’ nominated times a target number of laps is calculated by the organizers. The final result is measured against that target.
We all had some practice time, although I only had one lap to check the track still went clockwise, and final times were nominated by 10:15am. As usual, practice was frantic but a good opportunity to bed in some brakes and practise sash changes and for Chris to get used to his new car. Moving approx 150 cars on and off the track in an hour is quite an effort.
Each driver must complete more than 10% of the target laps and no driver may do more than 30% of the target so, given our target was approx 250 laps, was to send each car out for at least 25 laps on the first stint to complete the 10% and then do a second stint later.
Jason started for the team and once he got clear track set about banking regular bonus laps. Having one of the quickest cars on track and nominating below his capacity traffic did not cause too much grief when he got amongst it.
Twenty six cars around Mallala is heavier traffic than we normally see at a super sprint.
The team ran in order through John, Chris, Dean and Murray with each initially intended to do approx 25 laps but it was hard to call in a driver who was running consistently on time. Each driver did two stints on track amassing sufficient laps and Murray ran the last leg to the flag.
We had no breakdowns and all cars were still running at the end of the day which is quite an effort.
The team drove 201 laps, scored 62 bonus laps and lost 20 break out laps giving us a final score of 53.43% and a sixth place finish which was better than 2016.
Two cars from other teams were damaged, one in practice, with minor injuries to one driver but mostly the day ran smoothly.
This is a regularity event and not a race but the red mist can descend when a set of tail lights are viewed up ahead. A particularly interesting battle was when Murray caught Scott and had to make the pass. The Honda prevailed!
Thanks to the support team for all the hard work and keeping the drivers on their toes, thanks to the drivers for a solid, consistent drive and thanks to our Team Manager Rob for his steady guidance.
Congratulations to the MSCA for another well run Six Hour and we hope to return in 2018.
On Sunday 12 March the MSCA ran the first SA Come & Try super sprint at Mallala. The MSCA of Victoria has been running these for approx three years and their leaders, Bruce and Petrina Astbury, came over to run this day.
They also brought two regular Vic instructors, Kim Cole and Les Bone, to help. A total of sixteen regular sprinters worked as instructors with competing on the day as well. The C&T participants had three classroom sessions, two on track sessions with an instructor and two sessions solo. They had the same number of laps as the regular sprinters and C&T groups were fitted in after the sprinters.
Five MGCC SA members participated, Nick Micklem (MGZR), Steve Spong (MGBGT), Christine Oppatt (Supra), Brian Hills (MGBV8) and Karen Stephenson (MGA), and Garry Bolt and Murray Stephenson acted as instructors.
The weather was very unkind at times and the participants had a great time in torrential rain, particularly in the open cars! The objective of the day was to develop skills and to introduce participants to sprinting so that, if they come back for a “real” sprint, it won’t be as daunting.
Although there was room to improve on the organization the day was a success and the feeling from participants and instructors was very positive. It is anticipated that MSCA will do this again but as yet a date has not been set.
Thanks to all the drivers and instructors who made this a great day. And thanks to the MGCC flaggies who worked in the rain to keep the track safe.
On Sunday 26 February 2017, the MSCA picnic was held at Virgara Winery at Angle Vale. The site was great with lush green lawns to park and sit on and plenty of shade. There was also a winery and Subway nearby (very different target markets). We had six MGs on display, one MGB roadster, two MGB GTV8s, one MGTC, one MGZR and one MGA. In a parallel nearby display were a Lotus and a Toyota 86. The MG display theme was MGs in motorsport (thanks to Sandra for the idea) and we adorned our cars with old photos and racing memorabilia. The Alfa club had a display depicting forty years of their club which was judged to be better and they won. There was some serious banter between Bev and her son-in-law who was directing the Alfa display.
Trophies for the 2016 sprint series were presented and MG members were rewarded as follows:

Vintage Collingrove Hillclimb Meeting 2016
The Vintage Collingrove Hillclimb Meeting is a full weekend of activities, not just the Hillclimb on Sunday. To view photos from Wayne Hough - click here
The participants and their cars arrive in the Angaston area in the Barossa Valley on the Friday of the October 2016 long weekend, coming from interstate as well as local. The event starts off with a Welcome Dinner in Angaston.
On Saturday, all participants and other support vehicles take a morning tour of the Valley, stopping at lunchtime for a light lunch. In the evening everyone gathers for dinner in the area, to talk about their cars, and some other things as well.
On Sunday, everyone goes to the picturesque Collingrove Hillclimb. There is a lovely display of Classic and Vintage cars near the Car Park. Visitors are welcome to come in for a small fee. The Hillclimb runs for most of the day with come very friendly competition, particularly between SA and Victorian drivers! There is a small presentation ceremony at the end, then everyone goes back to Angaston for a lovely Farewell Dinner.
On Monday, everyone sets off for home, some nearer than others, to start getting ready for next year.
Peter Hall Memorial Six Hour Regularity – Sunday 1 May 2016
Prior to the event the forecast was not looking good but as usually happens it all blew over and we were blessed with a great day. Sue Stephenson says it never rains on her events. Must have connections.
Team Emgee this year consisted of Peter Coulson as Team Manager, Drivers John Davies (Toyota 86), Dean Hosking (Toyota 86), Jason Edwards (Lotus Elise), Murray Stephenson (Honda Civic), Andy Wortmeyer (MX-5) and Leigh Harris (Lancer EVO). Andy and Leigh are regular sprinters from other clubs who joined in with us. Sadly, not one MG in the team!
Our expert support crew consisted of Karen Stephenson, Bev Waters, Trevor Dunford, Tony Freckelton, Faye Edwards, Rob Hall, Geoff Harris, Dick Manning and his son, Jamie. Tim Edmonds was working as a scrutineer and supporter.
A full grid of twenty eight teams entered, the biggest field ever, with a number of Victorian teams and included a variety of cars from old sports cars, clubman’s, sedans, some registered and some race cars. I think half the SA population of Hyundai Excels was out there! Every second car I passed was an Excel. Scott Stephenson, an MGCC member, was sharing his Excel with its co-owner, Helen Stephenson, along with another Excel, a Honda Integra and an HQ Holden. They finished fifth in their first outing.
The Six Hour was Peter Hall’s baby and he would have been so proud to see this event. Not only was it a big field, but it included many younger drivers having their first go.
The objective of the Regularity event is for a team of up to six cars and drivers to carry a sash for six hours and score as many laps as they can within certain timing guidelines. Each driver nominates a time they propose to run continuously and, assuming the drivers equally share the six hours, a target number of laps is calculated by the organizers. If a driver beats his nominated time the lap does not count, i.e. time wasted, if he is more than a second slower he scores one lap and if he runs within his nominated second, e.g. 1:30.00 to 1:30.99, he scores a bonus lap, i.e. two laps. The objective therefore is to score double the target laps.
MSCA tried something new this year with scrutineering available for two hours at the Practice Day on the Saturday which is attended by most interstate teams and a number of SA teams. Our Peter Coulson and Tim Edmonds helped with that exercise and it was a great success meaning that scrutineering on Sunday was much quicker and practice started on time. That will happen again next year.
We all had some practice time and our final times were nominated by 10:15am. As usual, practice was frantic but a good opportunity to bed in some brakes and practise sash changes. Moving approx 150 cars on and off the track in an hour is quite an effort.

John started for the team and got us off to a steady start running consistent times and scoring regular bonus laps. Traffic made it hard to get into a regular rhythm and, as we had the third highest number of target laps our task was harder having to pass more cars. Twenty eight cars around Mallala is quite heavy traffic.
About an hour into the event one of the Excels fell over at turn one causing substantial damage to the car but the young driver was unhurt. She will return and was offered a replacement shell before she left the track. Nine laps of safety car was ideal for Murray to bed in some new brake pads which meant he used only one set of pads for the day and had something left at the end.
The team ran in order through John, Murray, Dean, Jason, Andy and Leigh with each initially intended to do approx 25 laps. Leigh came in early due to a bit of a scare when a car beside him ran off the road (no damage) and he misread a pit board. It was fortunate, however, as he was very low on fuel without realizing it.
Each driver did two stints on track amassing between 27 and 37 laps and Murray ran the last leg to the flag.
We had no breakdowns and all cars were still running at the end of the day which is quite an effort.
We did have an issue with break outs, i.e. running under the nominated time. These laps do not count so the time is lost and, although bonus laps can help, it was the break outs that hurt our result. I understand we set the highest break out score for the event but, despite this, a result of tenth place is commendable and we all had a great time.
Several cars spun and a number broke down but there was no damage other than the one rollover and generally the driving standard was very good. It is a very different event to a Super Sprint where you run with cars of similar times for a short time so there is little need to overtake. At the Six hour you are constantly overtaking or being overtaken so need to be alert all the time.

There was some discussion about a “real” MG team next year. How about a team of MGs and a team of non marque cars like this year? If you have an MG that can run consistently under one minute forty seconds give it some serious thought. We will be asking again before next May.

MSCA Picnic and Presentations – Mount Barker
Sunday 28 February saw approx twenty six MGCC members gathered at the Mount Barker Football Ground for the MSCA Presentation Picnic. We had 3 MGAs, 5 MGBs, 2 MGTFs, 1 MGRV8 and 1 MGTD on display with the theme of 1956, being the birth year of the MG Car Club of SA. We also had one ZR visit but not displayed.
Members were asked to bring along 1956 memorabilia and/or dress accordingly and many did. Sandra looked the part with the full skirt, white bobby socks and shoes and the lace around the skirt. Alan had the blue jeans and white tee shirt but refused to tuck it in despite Sandra’s pleading for authenticity. Jason brought out the TF and set out his picnic rug with period radio, picnic set and movie camera. Bev’s pony tails and Karen’s white shoes and socks also were appropriate. We enjoyed a relaxed picnic lunch in mild weather in a beautiful setting.
At the presentations Scott won the Under 2 litre race car class with the Excel and the MGCC won the club presentation award for the third consecutive year.
Thanks to all who turned up on the day and particularly thanks to those who set up and pulled down the gazebos and decorations. Thanks to Laurie for bringing the gazebos as I know they won’t fit in the A!

Motorkhana Series Round 1, Sunday February 7 by Murray Stephenson
Late in January we were informed that Big W had decided that nationally motorkhanas would no longer be run on Big W properties. After ten great years at Big W Monarto a new venue had to be found. Big W have been very generous to the motorkhana community over that time.
On Sunday 7 February round 1 of the 2016 Motorkhana series was run on the skidpan at Mallala.
The weather was warm and a field of forty five drivers competed over four courses. Among the forty five were five MGCCSA members, one Junior and eight Come & Try entries. MGCC was represented by Tim Edmonds in the MGB GT V8, Jason Edwards in the TD, Rob Hall in The Beast (MGB GT V8) and Scot and Murray Stephenson in the trusty Mirage.
Rob was trying some skinny tyres to get the Beast to slide around a bit easier. It worked but made it very hard to control.
As MG was running the day it was great to have a good team of workers including Bev Waters, Faye Edwards, Karen Stephenson, Laurie Houghton, Peter Coulson, Ian Curwen-Walker, Steve Bowra, Dave Beames, Tim, Jason, Rob and Scott setting up, running the event and packing up. Well done team and thank you.
As a new venue and the short notice to organize the event it all ran very well and Mallala is a good venue with one downside being the cost. The event still ran at a small profit and was a successful day.

The Motorsport Festival was this year run as a 2 day event at the Victoria Park Circuit. In only its second year the event has evolved into a Festival style meeting based on the Goodwood theme.
The main draw card for the event is an array of Formula 1 cars from the 80's & 90's. There are also over 200 cars are on Display and enough Ferrari's to satisfy even Geraldine's Ferrari fetish. The friendly atmosphere enables you to get right up close to all the cars & drivers.
On the competition side there are over 220 cars competing in 17 categories from F1, Modern Supercars, Ferrari challenge, Historic, Classic, Euro Coupe, GTR Challenge, EVO Challenge, Heritage touring cars and V8 supercars to name just some. If you can't find a category you like you must be very hard to please.
There were just the 2 MG Car club members competing with Lindsay Hick entered in the MG PA Special. There is something about an Aluminium Bodied car and it looked sensational on Track in the bright sunshine.
I entered my little EVO and had a Great event finishing with a best time of 51.5 sec. just a bit quicker than the Ian Ross owned Ex Allan Jones Beatrice Lola, but then again it wasn't the best Formula 1 car ever made.
However I do remember that car fondly as it led the F1 cars out on track at the first practice session at the Grand Prix in 1985.
I wasn't sure how I would like the shortened Clipsal track but they certainly got the original design right with the layout of the Senna Chicane and the section back into Victoria Park a real test. Although only 1.6Km in length I think we used the best bits and it certainly kept me entertained.
If you didn't go this year definitely worth a look next year.

Super Sprint Round 5 Mallala Report by John Davies.
The 5th and final Round of the MSCA Super Sprint series was run on the 27th September with 9 MG Car Club members competing. Another fine day was forecast with temps in the mid 20's but it certainly felt hotter than that and some of the cars were also feeling the heat. It was a mixed day for Laurie posting fastest MG of the day but retiring with a major engine issue (oil is not supposed to run out the exhaust and catch fire). Tim also had the MGB GT V8 out to play and put in some great times with the car showing plenty of attitude through the bends.
It was great to see Craig back in the big XA GT Falcon and he soon got back into the rhythm of Mallala with some great Laps and a PB. Jason also had a good day and continues to learn the car and improve on his times also with a PB. Scott had the Excel out for more practice (not that he needs it) and again put in some excellent laps chasing down much more powerful cars. I saw him slide the car through turn 1 that went on for probably 150 meters until the exit of turn 2. (Ah the exuberance of youth) Michael had a solid day in the MX5 and now seems to have the car issues sorted so we look forward to seeing more of him next year.
There are often little private battles that happen on the track and Bev was having one of these with her son in law Mark Thomas in his red Alfa. These can be the absolute most fun on track but they also include bragging rights and I am pleased to say that Bev did us proud beating Marks time by a massive 7/100ths second. Even better is that Bev can rub it in until the next round in March next year. Mark did tell me that he had moved his Dorian Timer position further back on the car (I assume for better weight distribution!) and that is what cost him the 1/10 sec. (I haven't heard that one before but must remember it)

Mallala Super Sprint Rd4, 16 Aug 2015 by Rob Hall.
Well they say if it’s a foggy morning the day will be fine, and that it was. A perfect day for some racing fun out at Mallala.

There was a good amount of competitors from the MG club with Jason Edwards out in his Lotus and when he wasn’t following me (I was of the track a bit) he was putting in some very good consistent times and is getting to grips with the handling of the “Bat Mobile”. Tim Edmonds out in the GT V8 and was having a great run, he certainly gets the most out of his car, quite spectacular to watch him throw it around. He had a slight hiccup in the last run losing a screw out of the side of the distributor but thanks to some cable tie magic managed to get home safe 'n' sound. Gary Bolt out again in the 4 cyl MGB, not so many spins this time for Gary and it reflected in his times consistently getting in the 1.29’s.
The V8 battle was on again between Laurie Houghton and myself in the V8 race cars (Laurie winning this time, but only just). We were only a couple of cars apart on the grid and while I tried my best I couldn’t catch him this time, however I did manage to witness a lovely pirouette by Laurie right in front of me which was exciting. I myself had a fun day with the car once again outperforming the driver, out braking myself numerous times. Michael Bugg was out in the MX5 turbo and put in some fantastic times with the new turbo fitted, it gets quite hot under that bonnet as he discovered after the first run melting the plastic top of the dipstick completely. Neil Williams and Brian Hills were out in the MGB V8 and was great to see the boys out again and I’m sure once they sort out a couple of little issues with the car they will be having a ball like the rest of us.
John Davies had the Evo back with a rebuilt gearbox and “The Master” didn’t disappoint with a new pb in the 1.16’s and as usual all his times were very consistent. Scott Stephenson was out in the Hyundai Excel getting in a bit of practice for the race meeting the following weekend as were a couple of other Excels and they were having some good battles with times. Ron Gates was out in the clubman and gets the prize for the day after turning his clubman in to a Bobcat after a small excursion into the sand at turn 7, bringing a small wheelbarrow of sand back to the pits in the front of the car. After a clean out and hose down he was back circulating with the rest of us.
There was a great turn out of spectators from the club who came out to watch and was very much appreciated by the competitors, Wayne Hough, Hugh Webber, Dave Maxwell, Steve Bowra, Maurice & Marcie Valodze, Dean Hosking, Fay Edwards. Bev Waters was entered but due to a crook leg couldn’t compete but came out to say hello.(I think she was just checking to make sure her son-in-law doesn’t beat her times in his Alfa). Dick Manning was out and should be competing next year in a newly purchased MGF race car and Paul Dalwitz brought out his TC Special to give it a shakedown before finishing the body and should be out competing next year, giving it a run at lunch on the parade laps. Some nice work has gone into it and should go well.
Overall a great fun day had by all, this is my last event for this year due to a holiday coming up so am signing off for now but watch this space. A bit sick of looking at the back of Laurie’s car so some more improvements are in order. (Friendly competition is healthy). Looking forward to some new cars and competitors being out there next year.

Super Sprint Round 3 Mallala Report by John Davies.
Round 3 of the MSCA Super Sprint series was run on the 19th July with 7 MG Car Club members competing. After the horrible weather on the previous hillclimb weekend it was a welcome change to get a clear sunny day with little wind and near perfect conditions which saw some good times posted. Jason debuted the Lotus at Mallala and performed extremely well however he did have a gardening expedition at one stage. (it obviously doesn't handle as well as a TD!!)
Scott had the Excel out for a bit more practice and also posted a couple of laps under 1.29. Garry had the 4 pot B working very well and posted several Laps under 1.30 and he didn't even have a spin. The battle of the MG B V8's was again hotly contested with Rob Hall getting the choccies on this occasion from Laurie by less than a second.
Our Club was rostered on for Flag duties and it was great to have so many volunteers. Thanks to Steve Bowra, Barry Burne, Tony Freckelton, Craig Reudiger, Alan Cardnell, Geoff Glasson Tim & Karen Johnson and Peter Coulson. It did look like they were having fun down at turns 5 & 7, and it is a great way to see the action up close. Thanks also to the other supporters who came out for the day Hugh Webber, Fay Edwards and Ian Curwen-Walker.

MSCA Super Sprint Round 2 2015 - Mallala
Round 2 of the 2015 MSCA Super Sprint series was run at Mallala on Sunday 21 June with nine MGCC members entered.
It was a cold start to the day but Karen’s breakfast of hot, fresh sausage rolls again started the day well.
There was a slow start to the day as there were insufficient flaggies to permit the event to start. Fortunately sufficient flaggies were found, including some who had entered for the day but took up a flag instead. Our own Berry Treffers did a great job as the starter. This delay meant no brake bedding or engine running in so some of us approached run one with some unknowns, e.g. Laurie’s new brakes and Rob’s new engine.
Thanks to the support team and well wishers on the day including; Peter Coulson, Tony Freckelton, Hugh Webber, Julie Hall, Stuart, Alexander and James Hick, Peter Young and others.

** Tim lined up the MGBGT V8 with Murray’s Honda on two occasions and the 3.5 litre V8 is clearly quicker off the line than the 1.5 litre 4 cylinder. He kindly let the Honda go and the two had fun picking off the MX-5s ahead, allowing Murray to set another PB.
|Garry Bolt||MGB||1:29.8||** After the first two runs Garry was trying to work out why he “kept spinning”. Couldn’t be going too fast or trying too hard. He sorted it out in the later runs and managed to get under the one minute thirty second mark.|

** Bev had the MGBGT V8 running well and it was great to watch her outrun the pack from pole position with newer cars behind.

The MG Car Club had just the 3 of us Hillclimb tragics competing at Round 2 of the Collingrove Wintercup Series run on 7th June.
It was a cold and overcast day and conditions were not going to see the best times (anyway that's my excuse)
I was back in the Evo and managed to get 1 run in the 33 Sec. bracket although it was very sideways over the line and backwards for a while until I finally got it pointed the right way to go down the return road. That Green stuff sure is slippery when wet!
Stan was back in the Elfin Clubman and did improve over his previous round but was having some clutch issues as well.
Lindsay was again in the TC Special and put in some consistent runs again finishing fastest MG on the day.
John Payne, long time & regular Hillclimb competitor has retired from racing and the J2 Special has been sold and is going interstate I have been told.
Unfortunately we may not see the car compete here again as it sure ticked all the box's (Looks good, Sounds Good & Smells Good)
Next Hillclimb is a Come & Try on 11th July, for any one interested in giving it a go you can call Murray or Myself if you would like to know more.

The first round of the Multi club hillclimb was held on 17th May in Glorious sunny conditions.
This is the first hillclimb counting towards our Club champion award however there were only 3 entries from the MG car club but still a large field of 109.
These may be the best conditions we will get at Collingrove for a while and Tim made full use of them being the standout performer on the day dropping his best time by nearly a full second to record a 39.00 on his last run. Oh for another 1/100th sec! His runs also included saving on front left tyre wear on the first left hander.

Lindsay again entered the TC and had another solid day posting a 42.62 best with his 2 sons taking it in turns to keep the seat warm for him between runs.
I entered my new daily driver and took a couple of runs to adjust to the car and the road tyres but still had a fun day.

An interesting event with different weather conditions throughout the day. Dry one minute – damp the next.
Fay Edwards assisted as the start marshal on one of the courses and looked worn out by the end of the day as she is not one to move slowly, but the course ran very smoothly. Thanks Fay. Her son Jason was very exciting to watch driving his TD – obviously been practicing his hand brake turns. The body lean on his car may have some of the members from the ‘old school’ horrified, but it was spectacular to watch and some of his times put me to shame and I drive a V8. Well done Jason.
Murray and Scott Stephenson had their usual father/son competition with Scott winning out. I think Murray is going to have to settle into second place for a while, although I am sure he will not give up trying. Wes Bray still drives his 1100 to its maximum, but he was disappointed he collected a couple of flags at this event, plus a wrong direction. Don’t feel bad, I collected a flag as did Murray and our Champion Motorkhana Driver Dave Beames. Dave also managed a record time on one of the courses.

The young group of drifters who now frequent these events are great to watch and very enthusiastic and competitive within their group. The wet surface had them sliding a little more than they would like but made for great viewing.

We were greeted with a foggy morning but by the time we all arrived at Mallala it was all clear and turned out to be a perfect day for racing. For those who are not aware of this event it is a 6 hour relay run with teams of up to 6 cars rotating nonstop over the day. The MG team of drivers consisted of Murray Stephenson (Honda Civic), Graham Loader (MG ZR), John Davies (Toyota 86), Michael Bugg (MX5) and Andy Wortmeyer (MX5). As you can tell not a lot of old MG’s in there. This event is fairly tough on the cars as your doing 25 to 40 laps at a time and the newer cars sometimes struggle with this as reliability and consistency is the key to doing well in this event.
The run started well with John Davies starting with a 35 lap stint with some very consistent times, Murray was next and things were going well with him doing 40 laps before having to come in after discovering brakes don’t work too well when there are no pads left on them. His brakes were so hot at the end metal on metal the brake backing plate welded itself to the calliper piston, now that’s putting in a complete effort. So up went the car on stands as Murray and Scott endeavoured to fix the brakes. Next out was Michael Bugg and after having problems in practice with his turbo going off boost it happened again after a lap or two and unfortunately he had to retire after around 5 laps. Next on track was Andy in his Supercharged MX5 and continued the great driving of the others with another great stint of around 35 laps returning to the pits with a car still operating which was a bonus. Graham was next out and he drove extremely well completing 33 laps especially as he hadn’t been out on the track for a year or more, in fact Graham gets the gong for being the most consistent on the day, which is no mean trick when your team mate is John Davies (aka Mr Consistency). However on inspection under the bonnet an oil leak from a cam seal put an end to any further runs for Graeme as he also had to drive the car home. So now down to 2.5 cars and nearly two hours to go some reworking of things was in order. Once again John put in another stella effort to get us through to 50 mins to go and all that was required was for Andy to finish out the day. All going well until the MX5 broke an exhaust with about 30 min to go, so with hasty unpacking of Murray’s Honda (brakes now fixed, sort of!! he went out and saved the day with 4 laps whilst the magnificent Pit crew wired up Andy’s exhaust to complete the final laps and the day.
All in all a fantastic effort by everyone on the day and the MGCCSA Team ended up in 4th place out of 22 teams, which ponders the question, If Only?
Results of the cars laps and bonuses are as follows;
Graham: Laps completed 33, Breakouts 1, Bonus 18, Total 50, Overall 151.5%
John: Laps completed 70, Breakouts 2, Bonus 26, Total 94, Overall 134.3%
Murray: Laps completed 44, Breakouts 6, Bonus 16, Total 54, Overall 122.7% (this includes 4 laps circulating with brake problems)
Andy: Laps completed 51, Breakouts 8, Bonus 18, Total 61, Overall 119.6%
Michael: Laps completed 5
Safety car Yellow laps 8.
These events could not operate without the dedication and help from all involved and I (as Team Manager) would like to thank everyone who assisted or just came out to support on the day.
To mention a few. A big thanks to Steve Bowra for supplying and running the BBQ on the day with a tasty breakfast and lunch for all . Bev Waters , Karen Stephenson and Fay Edwards who’s efforts in the timing hut were once again faultless .The pit wall helpers, Eric Ericson, Tony Frecklton, Dick Manning, Peter Coulson, Jason Edwards and Laurie Houghton and also our super pit person Scott Stephenson who helped everyone get organised with their cars and was there when they needed help fixing them. Other members out for the day included Tim Edmonds (Scrutineering) Ian "Curly" Walker, and Hugh Webber.
And finally I would like to congratulate the MSCA team for running a fantastic event which truly honours the efforts that Peter Hall put into it over the years to support grass roots racing in SA. The day ran well from sign in right through to the dinner at the end of the day.

Hillclimb Winter Cup 1 Report - Sunday, 12 Apr 2015, by John Davies
The first round of the hillclimb season was run on 12th April with an entry field of 119. This is the largest field for some time and followed a Come & Try day on the Saturday of 90 entries. This all goes well for a great season of hillclimbing especially for the spectators.
Collingrove is located in the beautiful Barossa 9km from Angaston. I tell my friends that Collingrove is the Motorsport Equivalent to Oakbank with a beautiful country setting to have a picnic and a glass of Chardonnay while watching the cars tackle the Hill. Why not come up for the day or if you would like to have a go at motorsport the Come & Try is a great way to start.
Being the first official event for the year the track surface did appear to be a little green especially at turn
1. This made the day entertaining for some of the competitors including myself with a gardening adventure on run
2. With a field of 119 cars it may be great for the spectator but this means that 5 or 6 runs will be the max for the day so you have to make every run count.
Only 3 MG CC SA members were entered with Lindsay Hick posting a 42.60 second run to be fastest MG on the day with all runs within 0.3 sec. This included beating a MG BV8, very nice work.
Stan Ward was having some issues with the Gearbox in his Elfin with his times off his best and he was not a totally happy chap. This just makes you want to get back to the next event even more so I am sure Stan will sort it out for the next one.
I had recently fitted a new rear LSD to the EVO and was keen to see how it went especially in the tight top sector where I was losing some time. This did also change the car characteristics (a bit more taily). This combined with the low grip level on the track required a slight change in driving style being a bit less aggressive and included braking for turn 1 which I don't normally do, however I did manage to put in a couple of good runs. As they say try and be smooth, drive to the conditions and don't overdrive the car and the times will come. However this is not always your thinking when you put your helmet on!!

The 7th running of the Mt Alma Mile was held on the weekend of the 28th & 29th March 2015.
Mt Alma is a stand alone Hillclimb held just north of Victor Harbor and is the Longest in the state. Other hillclimb events in SA include Legend of the Lakes at Mt. Gambier and the Old Willunga Hillclimb in late November.
As the name suggests Mt Alma is run over a course of 1 Mile and is relatively High speed with a 350 metre straight uphill climb to the first left hand corner followed by an incline of 19 degrees. (this doesn't sound a lot but is very steep)
Mt Alma is unique in that all runs count and it is your accumulated time of all runs that makes up your outright place. This rewards consistency and makes any mistake very costly.
A field of 160 cars was entered including Ferrari, Lamborghini, Kevin Mackrells 900+ HP 4WD Datsun and over 50 4WD cars including several race prepared Nissan R35 GTR's with over 1000HP.
A speed trap is positioned at the 200 Metre mark from the start line with the quickest car reaching 201KMH from a standing start. (Very, Very quick)
I entered my little Mitsubishi Lancer EVO 8 and had a very solid event. To compare my best speed at the speed trap was 143KMH which was 37th fastest and I finished 27th outright and 3rd in Class out of 160 competitors with a best time of 46.4 seconds. The outright winner was Kevin Mackrell in his very quick 4WD V8 powered Datsun 260Z with a best time of 39.7 seconds.!!
It was good to see a few MG car club members at the event including Allan & Raelene Semmler, Wayne & Geraldine Hough and Garry Bolt.

The MGCC of SA ran the first round of the 2015 Motorkhana series at Big W Monarto on Sunday 8 March in fine, warm conditions. A large field of fifty five drivers entered including nine MGCC members. The MGCC group included an MGBGTV8, MG1100, MGB, MGA, MGF, FWD Special and a Mirage. We were alerted to it being International Women’s Day and it was impressive to see that thirteen women were competing including two from MGCC. (One could say that’s a lot of WDs, “Women Drivers”) Read CAMS article here.
One Nissan Skyline was put on the trailer during practice and a Mazda 121 ran out of battery during the day but otherwise it was a mechanically uneventful day and the MGs performed beautifully.
Rick Smith brought out the B for its annual motorkhana and Murray ran the A in preparation for the National Meeting.
The Hough's continue to have fun in the F, although I believe Wayne pushed his luck a bit with a comment about Geraldine driving faster in the Coles carpark! Hopefully they will return for round 2.
There was good contingent from the WRX Club who nominated this event as part of their club championship and a number of new faces including one NDCC member in a 1977 Camaro which was hard work. Good to see new people and cars coming out to have a go.
A great team of helpers fronted on the day with Dave there early to set up the track, as he does for every round, and Chris, Geraldine and Karen taking entries. Scott helped with scrutineering and Tim was Clerk of Course for the day, except when he was on the track. The team of Chris Bray, Laurie Houghton, Ian Curwen-Walker, John Davies, Peter Coulson and Bev Waters did a great job of timing and thanks to Chris for distributing the results on Monday. At the end of the day it was all hands on deck to pack up.
Thanks to Peter Coulson for towing the trailer to and from Monarto and I understand it was a lot easier to bring home. Big W have permitted the Motorkhana Panel to build a small shed beside the course where we can now store the majority of motorkhana equipment, particularly the concrete bases and poles. Thank you Big W.
Thanks to all those who helped on the day, and before, those who competed and those who came to watch. It was a great day for all involved and the feedback from other clubs has been positive.
Hillclimb, Sunday 26 October 2014
Competitors are arriving much earlier these days to secure a prime position to put their club on display. (One as early as 6.30am was lined up at the gate). Thanks to the Hick family who held an area near the start line for some of the MG group.
Spectators included Ian Curwen-Walker, Jan Ward, Paul Dallwitz, Judy Goodale, Terry Wright, Stewart and Alexander Hick.
Our last event for our Club’s Competition Year, with a four month break before it starts all over again. Murray Stephenson’s report gives a great wind up to the year’s activities and what we can expect next year. We are looking at having a pre-season get together early next year to present the Motorsport Class trophies and also get everyone revved up for the coming Season.
Higher temperature than normal for Mallala, saw many cars over-heating, and some not completing the day because of the conditions.

Although not an MG Car Club member, Mark Thomas (Bev’s son in law) had his first Mallala Sprint and now there is further rivalry within the camp with his best time of 1:39.76 in an Alfa and cant wait until next year.
Motorkhana Round 5, Sunday 28 September - by Murray Stephenson
Round 5 of the Big-W Monarto Motorkhana Series, the final round for the season, was run on September 28.
The weather was good but only 20 competitors, including two come & try entries, turned out.
As usual, Dave Beames was there to help with the setup and then to compete in the Specials class in Adrian Flynn’s Knotsew (Special). OPCs (Other People’s Cars) always go faster and Dave comfortably beat Adrian on the day with a class win.
Another competitor in an OPC was Scott Stephenson in his mother’s Mirage and he continued his development getting faster as he masters the reverse throws. The Go Pro footage is amazing as he throws the car into the finish garage. Explains the tyre wear!
Tim Edmonds had the BGT V8 going well but appeared to have some issues stopping in garages, losing valuable points for not stopping. His times were respectable for class B giving him third place but when first and second in class finish fourth and fifth outright with a class record each it makes it hard.
All enjoyed themselves and we now have a break to prepare the cars for the 2015 season.
SA Hillclimb Championships - by John Davies
The South Australian Hillclimb Championships were held at Collingrove on the weekend on the 13th & 14th September in perfect conditions.
A near full field of 116 entries with 5 MGCCSA entrants as well as several
Rob Hall continued to improve his times in "The Beast" getting into the 36sec bracket and then just "going for it" on his last run to smash another 1/2 sec from his best time to get within a tenth of Laurie who also put in his best time of the day on the last run by 2/100's sec.
Warren Litchfield, John Davies and Stan Ward all had a consistent event with Stan also picking up the Trophy for 2nd in his Class. It was also great to see a good spectator crowd including Julie Hall supporting Rob, Jan Ward working in timing as she so often does and Paul Dallwitz who must be getting itchy about getting out there in his MG Special.

MSCA Super Sprint Aug 24th – by John Davies
The most spectacular moment for the day (and probably the year) was a passing move by our editor on the straight going down into turn 7. After closely trailing an Alfa for a 2 laps Laurie took the outside run through turn 6 and then pulled right to execute a pass only to put both right hand side wheels on the grass. This immediately turned the car left in front of the oncoming Alfa. Somehow both cars managed to avoid each other with Laurie then spearing across the infield. All this occurring at over 100MPH with much tyre smoke! Laurie continued the day without event and consistent low 1.22's. ( some suggested a change of underwear was required)
Rob Hall continues to get quicker in "The Beast" with 1..22 laps also posted although he was obviously pushing it a bit as I did notice an OFF at turn 2.
Due to communication equipment failure at the circuit the event format was changed to a Circuit Sprint for the second half of the day. A Circuit Sprint only allows 5 cars on the track at once with absolutely No passing. Cars leave the pits every 15 seconds and must keep this distance before starting 4 flying laps..
John Davies had a trouble free and consistent day however he found the last 2 Circuit Sprints very lonely circulating around with no cars in sight. This certainly showed how well the Super Sprint format has developed over the years and how well it is run by the MSCA.
Rodney Gibb came out to give some support, as did Bev’s son in law Mark Thomas who is keen to give it a go next year in his Alfa.
The last MSCA Super Sprint for the year is the 19th October. See you there..
Round 3 Winter Cup Hillclimb 3rd August 2014
Although no rain was forecast driving into the circuit gave a clue to the events of the day with the entry road looking more like a river than a road.
Just the 3 MG CC members were competing and with a small field of 70 talk before competition had started (and before we had seen the track) was about a good day ahead with 9+ runs scheduled.
Recent heavy rains had meant that the ground was at saturation point and although the first sector was relatively clean there was standing water in the Dip and water running across the circuit in 10 other places mostly in the entry to a corner or where power is to be applied. This created an eventful day for a lot of competitors with many offs including a rollover at the left hander into the esses also where John Davies had a spin in the Evo which was interesting given the track is less than 11 feet wide and the car is 15 feet long and without putting a wheel on the grass. With the car facing the wrong way the return to the pits was back down the track, although I can now say I have driven down both Route 66 and Collingrove Hillclimb in the wrong direction!.
With only 3 runs before lunch and 6 in total the recovery vehicle was getting the most runs in for the day (even the recovery 4WD needing recovery after getting bogged in the infield) times were not the best but Laurie drove the BV8 very well and Lindsay putting the TC ahead of many other cars including an Austin Healey Sprite and Datsun 240Z.

Sunday July 20 started out cold and dry with a field of 67 entries including six MGCC members. As MGCC was also rostered on for officialling we had another eight volunteers ready for work.

Multi club Hillclimb 13 July 2014 - Rob Hall
You know it’s a cold morning when you arrive at Collingrove and the surrounding fields are white instead of green. The official temperature was -1degree C. but it did eventually warm up to an ok day in the end with some good times posted later in the day. There were 6 MGCC members competing, Rob Hall, Bev Waters and Arthur Ruedigor in the MGB GT V8’s, Lindsay Hick in the TC Special ,Stan Ward in the Elfin Clubman and John Davies in the Evo.

Sunday morning started out wet and cold with a field of 64 entries. Seven MGCC members braved the conditions for some fun. “Take it easy” was the order of the early sessions as the track was very slippery and one first timer learned his lesson in the familiarisation run when he spun between turns 6 & 7 and badly damaged his Nissan 200SX. His day was over.
May 25th 2014 Collingrove Hillclimb from Bev Waters
Ecstatic about his new competition car and the way it was handling at his first attempt at Collingrove with it, Rob Hall was there in his MGBGTV8 Special, and you couldn’t wipe the smile off his face. Talk about a Cheshire cat.
His first time for the day was 40.13, and by the completion of the day his best time was 37.53.
Alan Cardnell in his second drive at Collingrove in his MGB, experienced mechanical problems with the car running too rich and fowling up the plugs, and had to continually tinker between drives.
His daughter Lisa who was sharing the car and in her first Hillclimb event, was not able to complete all the runs, however she saw a big improvement in times on each run, taking over nine seconds off her first time, and I am sure will be keen to try again. (I am pleased to report Alan was able to rectify the problem before the MG Interclub Challenge two weeks later, and he won his class at that event.)
Not so fortunate was Lindsay Hick in his TC Special who experienced electrical problems at his second run and had to withdraw.
John Davies whose regular competition car the Mitsubishi Evo was under repair, and he had to substitute with the ‘Shopping car’, Toyota 86. Asked how it was performing? “Slooow” was the response.
Arthur Ruediger & Bev continue alternating positions, and is always a constant battle with each run to try and outdo the other.
Peter Goodale & Stan Ward with support from their better halves Judy and Jan, continue to be consistent, although Stan gets frustrated when he can’t quite repeat his personal best time at each run.
Spectators included Tim Edmonds (official), Ian Curwen-Walker, Terry White, Helen Tamke, Judy Goodale, Sandra Cardnell & entourage, David Broadbent TC, and Paul Dallwitz who was there to watch his son Wes compete in his new acquisition, and who finished with a respectable 39.9 time.
A familiar face from the 60-70s MG days, Robin Bostock was at the event in his MX5, and managed to catch up with a couple of familiar faces.
A few regulars were missing from this event as they were preparing their cars for the Inter Club Challenge two weeks later, but another enjoyable day in paradise with the sun shining and everything green.

MSCA Six Hour Regularity, Sunday 4 May - from Murray Stephenson.
The forecast for the week prior to the Six Hour was for rain, and lots of it, but as the week wore on the forecast slowly changed to “a morning shower” and down to “cloudy”. Thankfully all turned out to be wrong!
We saw a dozen drops of rain as we entered Mallala township and saw no more for the day. After a cool start to the morning we clear skies and sunshine all day.
Team Emgee consisted of Rob Hall as Team Manager, Drivers Laurie Houghton (MGBV8), John Davies (Toyota 86), Dean Hosking (Toyota 86) and Murray Stephenson (Honda Civic) and a support crew of Karen Stephenson, Bev Waters, Eric Erickson, Tony Freckelton, Fay Edwards, Jason Edwards, Peter Coulson and Ian Curwen-Walker.
For those unfamiliar with the principle of a Regularity event, the objective is for a team of up to six cars and drivers to carry a sash for six hours and score as many laps as they can within certain timing guidelines. Each driver nominates a time they propose to run continuously and, assuming the drivers equally share the six hours, a target number of laps is calculated by the organizers. If a driver beats his nominated time the lap does not count, i.e. time wasted, if he is more than a second slower he scores one lap and if he runs within his nominated second, e.g. 1:30.00 to 1:30.99, he scores a bonus lap, i.e. two laps. The objective therefore is to score double the target laps.
Paperwork and scrutineering was slow with such a large field and practice and race start were delayed. A sports car hitting the wall on the exit of turn 2 at the start of practice didn’t help.
As John and Dean had not competed in the Toyotas it was a priority for them to record a practice time for nominations by 10:15am. Laurie had a spin in practice and couldn’t restart which was an initial concern but he had no further issues.
John started for the team and got us off to a steady start running consistent times and scoring regular bonus laps. The 86 is not as quick as the EVO but he found it easy and comfortable to maintain a steady pace.
He was followed by Dean in another 86 but he took a different tack, leaving the Stability and Traction Controls engaged. He found these caused little interruption provided he drove smoothly.
Murray ran next in the Honda and had a great time playing in the traffic although playing enthusiastically with one clubbie caused a break out, which was also a pb. Laurie ran fourth in the MGB and worked hard to maintain the nominated pace which was quite a bit slower than his normal sprint pace.
The variety of cars and driver capabilities means the speed differential can make for some interesting traffic situations but generally the driving standard was good and I was not aware of any cars swapping paint although I understand one mini removed his rear bumper on someone else’s car as he spun in his own oil spill! No panel damage but very close!
A number of cars ran off the track and one Alfa Romeo buried itself in the turn 7 “sand trap”. He went so far into the trap I am sure he could see Gawler! Barry Kitts brought out the Nissan Patrol recovery vehicle and under safety car attempted to recover the Alfa. It took a while.
Team Emgee had no breakdowns, no spins, no issues, i.e. no excitement really, just good solid lapping for the full time.
Later in the day the batteries in our timers’ radios died so no information could be relayed to the pit wall to inform the driver how he was going against his nominated time. Eric had this wonderful blank expression accompanied sometimes by a pit board with a decimal point or just a shrug of the shoulders. I am not sure what each of these signals meant other than he had no idea how I was going. Better to run a bit slow to ensure no lost laps.
There were several Safety Car periods and it has been suggested that the SC covered more laps than any competing car. The SC sessions gave the car a chance to cool down or for the team to change cars with minimum lost time. Our Team Manager was on the ball and used these opportunities to the maximum.
Team Emgee finished the event in fifth place on provisional scores. A commendable effort.
Thanks to the support team for all the hard work and keeping the drivers on their toes, thanks to the drivers for a solid, consistent drive and thanks to our Team Manager Rob for his steady guidance. I think he will be wanting to drive in 2015 and I could see his feet itching all day to be out there!
Mallala Easter Historics, April 2014 – Bill Schapel
On top of the Adelaide Motorsport Festival, only a week later, came the annual Historic Race Meeting at Mallala, the traditional Easter Historic Collingrove being moved from Easter Monday to the Wednesday between the other events. The plan was to make it easier for interstaters to stay just the week and enjoy three great outings. Seemed a good idea, but unfortunately it was poorly subscribed, so had to be cancelled due to lack of entries.
The Mallala meeting, as usual, was fabulous. The fields were not large, like a Phillip Island, but the racing was close and keen and everyone had a good time on and off the circuit.
A wide range of vehicles were on the track, from Sports Sedans, Sports cars, Race cars in several classes and of course the group S prod sports, where several MGBs and Spridgets were strutting their stuff.
Group N is always entertaining, with Falcon GTs, Toranas aplenty, a Camaro, and a few Cooper S (real ones) – doing amazing things to stay close to the front, Jason Armstrong’s Cooper S getting a 3rd and a few 4ths outright, with all the cars in front having around four times the capacity! In group S our own Troy Ryan was beset with problems in the Sprite, while fastest MGBs were Dave Anderson (Vic) and Kent Brown (ACT), both consistently turning in 1:25s. Not bad for 4 cylinder cars.
I saw very little of the other races, being rather engrossed with our own cars in groups K (Pre-war) and Lb, (racing cars from 1946 to 1959). The amazing fact is that little brother Bob won all three scratch races from pole, and this is the fourth year he has done so! So twelve scratch races at Mallala on the trot, rather a special feat. But one of his best drives I think was the last handicap, where he started the race last (of course), gave some cars a huge start, and gathered them all up to win that too! Why he was not awarded driver of the meeting I don’t know.…
Brother Bill had a good time too, with a fourth outright and a lot of dicing and fun in the others. Great fun with Derry Greeneklee in his Cooper J.A.P. running inches apart. Naturally we celebrated the fun immediately afterwards. “That’s what it’s all about,” Derry said. There are so many drivers you can trust to dice with in safety, knowing they will not try to drive you off the road. Fantastic fun!
Dozens of friends from the car club and interstate came to the Schapelli Pits but I will not attempt to name them, far too many. Wives Jenny and Mai came along on the Sunday, with Amy and new husband Luke, and Michaela Jarrett. Thanks to all for their support… and of course those amazing volunteer officials. Love ‘em.

MSCA Supersprint Round 1 - 23 Mar 2014

On Sunday 23 March the first round of the 2014 MSCA Super Sprint series was run at Mallala. Fortunately the threat of “morning showers” resulted is a very brief spray which only smudged with the wipers. The MGCC fielded a strong team of thirteen drivers including some new cars and drivers.

On Sunday 30 March the second round of the 2014 Motorkhana series was run by Nissan Datsun Car Club (NDCC) at Big W Monarto on a fine and warm day. A small field of twenty five drivers competed including four MGCC members. There was an MGBGTV8, an MG1100, an MGTD and a Mirage.
Motorkhana Come’n’try and Practice Day By Geraldine & Wayne Hough.
If you ever have thoughts of trying your driving skills at a Motorkhana do yourself a favour and spend a one of the best days and come to a Come’n’try/Practice day at Monarto.
On a lovely sunny Sunday on the 23rd of February one of the best attended Come’n’try/Practice days took place. There were 29 entered in the Come’n’try and 15 in the practice. For those familiar with the setup at Monarto one course was dedicated to the Come’n’try entrants and the other was used by those out to practice.
Before the action took place all cars were scrutineered by our very own Club Member Scott Stephenson. Scott also took on the extra role of training one of the Come’n’try entrants, Sue Stephenson’s daughter. The drivers’ briefing was handled by Adrian Flynn. Adrian’s briefings, whilst covering all of the important aspects, are done with great humour and much laughter from those listening.
Geraldine and I have attended a number of Motorkhanas but we have never been taught how to get the most out either the car or ourselves. Thanks to Dave Beames, who was supervising the Practice entrants, we learnt how to push the limit of both the car and our skill. The morning session was dedicated to trying to master the fastest way around the course. With no set test we were able to circulate in any direction trying various ways around the poles. Dave soon worked out that the hand brake on our F was insufficient to master hand brake turns, being only for parking, so it was better to try and get the rear of the car in a power slide around the poles. It was a very exciting morning. After lunch it was agreed by all that we would try our skills at a regular set course. Whilst there was no timing done both Geraldine and I felt that we went much faster around the course thanks to Dave’s advice and training from the morning session.
It was great to meet up with Rick Smith, Club member from Hindmarsh Island. Rick used his beautifully prepared MGB in the Come’n’try section proving that it is possible to use your MG for events other than social activities with no ill effects. Rick has already entered for the March 9th Motorkhana. Club member Vern Richter and his grandson came along to see what all the fun was about. For Murray and Karen please be assured that Scott treated the Mirage very gently (would I lie to you!!!!).
It looks like the Toyota 86 is rapidly becoming the track day car of choice by many. We counted at least 6 at Monarto on the day. Not all were competing but those that did showed that the 86 is a very versatile and agile road/track day vehicle. The photo shows three of the 86’s that were competing. They are however put in the shade by the stunning race prepared MGF!!!!!!!
Whilst the off-track atmosphere at a motorkhana is relaxed, very friendly and fun it in no way belies the fact that competing in a Motorkhana is an excellent way of learning car handling skills that can be used, if needed, in our daily driving.

COLLINGROVE HILLCLIMB MULTICLUB 3 – 20TH OCTOBER 2013 by Geraldine Hough
A glorious sunny day greeted the hill-climb enthusiasts for the last club event of this year. 80 drivers entered the event with 6 from the MG Car Club. All the drivers were keen to get going early in the morning as it was one of the rare occasions (for 2013 at least) where the tarmac was becoming hot and dry thus ensuring faster times! It was good to see that the SCCSA have put down gravel drives in the paddock parking area which should help greatly in the winter months. Other improvements include a deck around the club building and evidence of more interior work to be done over summer.
2013 South Australian Hillclimb Championship – 7 & 8 September
The SA Hillclimb Championship was run on the weekend of September 7 & 8 at Collingrove. Given the horrible conditions of most hillclimbs this year it was a pleasant surprise to compete in glorious sunshine for the two days. A field of 107 entries turned out demonstrating a vast array of machinery including some very fast road cars to some extremely fast open wheelers. We were even treated to watching Norm Beechey blast his Chev Camaro up the hill in a very respectable time. (I hope I can still do that at 81 years!).
Mallala Super Sprint Report 25th August 2013
The weather report for the week leading up to the day was promising. Fortunately we were not let down, with no rain at all, (this was after a very cold and wet preceding week). There was very little wind and the track offered good traction and a pleasant comfortable temperature which allowed several entrants to obtain their personal best times.The Schapels
Upon my arrival at the track, I was greeted with a worrying sign for Laurie who was being towed around the pit area trying to start his engine. The motor was seriously backfiring, and would not start. Helpful bystanders offered advice to him that his ignition timing was way out, so Laurie changed his plugs and this fixed the problem - much to the amazement of everyone. Due to this, he got to scrutineering late, but still managed to compete after previously thinking that he would have to withdraw. After all these problems, his battery was still unable to start the car, and was so concerned, that he left it running during the driver’s briefing, and for the rest of the day he needed to be push-started by those nearby.

There were 10 MGCC entrants amongst a field of 67 cars. The fastest lap time of the day was 1:14.36 from Stephen Haddock in a Mantis Super Sport. John Davies was our fastest coming 8th overall with a best time of 1:19.23. This was an excellent result as it was the 3rd fastest of the sedans. The best of the MG’s was Laurie Haughton with his new 4.6 litre V8. This was his second meeting with this engine, and after the last wet round, it proved to be a big improvement, with Laurie getting his PB of 1:21.69. This was an improvement of nearly 2 seconds from the last meeting.

Other dramas on the day included both blue MGB’s (mine and Eric’s) having cooling problems caused by incorrect radiator caps not sealing. Eric swiftly headed in to Mallala to purchase 2 new caps. Unfortunately, this was fruitless and he had to travel to Sprints at Two Wells. They only had 2 caps of differing pressures that were looking close to being suitable. Whilst Eric missed round 2, I attempted to solve my cap problem, by inserting a spacer under the rubber washer to pressurize the system. As I had no suitable materials like rubber, I cut the bottom off 2 polystyrene coffee cups to seal. This worked well (temporarily) and allowed me to finish round 2. Inspection of the coffee cups after the round showed that they had partially melted, but had at least sealed enough to get around. For round 3, Eric fitted his new cap which looked good, but mine was too long and would not close. Fortunately I had an angle grinder with a thin cutting blade, so I delicately cut off part of the pressure spring to allow it to compress enough. This also seemed to now fit well and offered sealing thus pressurization and higher boiling points. (which had previously been missing in both blue MGB’s). Unfortunately Eric’s cap sealed too well and he blew a welsh plug, leaving him stranded trackside. Mine sealed well and I was able to record a PB…..until I returned to the pits where an eruption occurred due to a blown radiator hose under higher than normal pressure. The moral of this story for both of us was to buy some correct caps.

All day there was rivalry on between the Stephenson’s and the Schapel’s. Scott was keen to outdo Murray and finally ended up just over 1 second better. The Schapel camp is still in Bill’s favour but Georgie is catching up fast. I was pleased to finally be able to better Hugh’s time in round 3, much to his shock. Determination came to the fore, when Hugh with a great grin, proudly announced that he had just pipped me by 0.4 s in the last official run.

Eric Erickson. 1:35.1567 4 laps. At beginning of day, spotted dancing in the paddock to rock music and “All I want to do is get today is at least 3 laps out of the car. I guarantee nothing!” At end of day “I wanted 3 laps and at least I got 4.” Final comment “The 2 B’s were steaming and died, choked in their own fluid discharge”…...referring to the coolant loss causing a wet ignition system.

The above events finish off ‘our Club’ Competition Year which will now go into recess during the summer months, and re-commence again in March next year. It is disappointing that our two final events are calendared on the same day which will split the field, but we are in the hands of the event organizers.

At the recent Sprint, thanks to Karen Stephenson for the breakfast of warm sausage rolls again (another hit), and assistance with photos from Eric Erickson. It was great to see Georgie and Bill Schapel there competing in the TC Special. It has been two years since Georgie has been to Mallala, but she hasn’t lost her touch behind the wheel. Congratulations to her and Brett on their recent marriage.
It is always appreciated when members contribute to articles, and I thank Gary Bolt for this month, and Geraldine Hough, Eric Erickson and Laurie Houghton for the last magazine.
Although not acknowledge enough, I wish to also thank Bill Schapel for his regular motorsport articles on the MGs and their exploits at interstate meetings at Philip Island, Winton etc. which he and several other MG members regularly attend. They are always interesting reading and accompanied by great photos - it sounds like the group always have a fabulous time, so I must try and get there in 2014.
SEPTEMBER 2013 MOTORSPORT REPORT
The recent Super Sprint at Mallala has to be one of the coldest I have experienced there, and the number of entries was way down overall from most clubs participating. However, the MGCC still managed to field ten drivers of the fifty five, which was a good effort.
Eric Reports : Starting out very cold but with blue skies and a drying track I just knew this was probably not going to be my best opportunity to see if I had overcome to issues I had with the car with keeping coolant in the engine last time out, but I was determined to gently push the car around the track to test my handiwork. My first run saw me dodging a spinning MX5 and was cut short by a spray of water from my front left corner. On investigation I found that the overflow tube had come loose from the radiator - my handiwork had been tested.

Winter Cup 3 Hillclimb
Four club members competed with Stan Ward and myself in the over 3000cc class which included Kevin Weeks in his Turbo Porsche, Kevin retired with a broken rear sway bar but neither of our V8s were going to match the performance of the Porsche.
John Davies entered his EVO 8 and Lindsay Hick in the TC Special, Stan put in consistent times but like myself was not able to get near our previous bests.
Bev Waters arrived later in the afternoon from the Motorkhana at Monarto where she had intended to compete however not long after leaving home her MGBGTV8 developed a noise in the transmission so she returned home and drove down to Monarto in her Lancer, took some photos there and some at the hillclimb on her way home, that’s dedication for you!
I shouldn’t be putting this in print but everyone knows about it now, I had a “seniors moment” on run 3, just after passing the old timing box I was distracted by something flying backwards and forwards in the passenger area ( no seat there ), it was my helmet !! drove all the way with a cap on, needless to say got a mention from the Steward and the Clerk of Course and the run was disqualified, O well #### happens.
RESULTS Best times
A pleasant day, and green surroundings at last. The dark clouds passed over quickly until the last run of the day, which saw many deciding not to do the last run. Competitors were give eight runs, and having two cars on the track at once, there is not as much waiting around as there used to be.
Lindsay Hick ad the honour of driving the oldest car there in his TC Special, and Laurie Houghton was the fastest MG and really putting his engine rebuild to the test.
Motorkhana Rnd 2
Winton Historics, May 2013 Bill Schapel
Always a winner, my favourite circuit and a lovely picnic atmosphere, Winton’s annual car and bike event is stunning. With a huge entry of cars, second only to the Island in March, and with the added atmosphere, sights, sounds and smells of the bikes it is very special.
The bikes include names which evoke memories of the golden years – Indian, Douglas, AJS, Rudge, Harley, ESO, Matchless, Manx Norton, Ariel, BSA and of course the stunning Vincent Black Lightning. The sidecars too are entertaining, a spectacular spill stopping proceedings for a while but with minimal damage to rider and passenger we were all relieved. Of course, like the cars, access for spectators is encouraged. We love to talk about our mounts!
We had 20 MGs competing. A PA, J2, J3, F Magna Special, K3, 2 TAs, 2 “TB”s, 8 TCs and 3 cars with TC chassis or power including Smith’s gorgeous MG Holden Monoposto driven by the legendary Paul Trevethan.
Looking first at the events where MGs appear, Group J&K is always a fabulous group. We sorely miss John Payne’s blown J2/xpag, which was always fighting for first place, but our Michael Shearer in the Ford V8 special had a ball with Wilson’s similar car, sharing the spoils at the front. Fastest MGs were Ryan’s blown TA/xpag, Murdoch’s TB, the ex-Bira K3, Willis’ “TB”, then Steinfort’s PA and then a replica of the famous TA “Tomlinson Spl.” (The TBs, it must be said, usually are a TA chassis with an xpag engine. I guess if you add TA and TC and divide by 2, you get TB…..). Best destructive explosion of the last year has to be poor Pat Ryan’s TA – his xpag engine blew to smithereens in the first event. Crank, with Carillo rods still attached, on the track; large bits of motor car strewn everywhere. Engine block in several pieces. Expensive stuff. Pat was calm, totally philosophical. Brave man.
Group S was dominated by Meyer’s MG Midget. So quick, so smooth, but our Troy Ryan’s Spridget kept him honest, after they spectacularly harried, hunted down and destroyed Jackson’s Pantera in both scratch races. So spectacular to watch, with almost 7 litres of well driven Pantera like a lioness with two hyena in attack. Amazing, with our own Trevor Dunford’s GTV8 close behind the lovely Healey 3000 for two 4ths and a 5th outright and three class wins! Well driven, Trevor.
Regularity had 10 MGs, some also in the races with different drivers. Georgie Schapel and Matt White in their Dad’s TCs, John Noble in the ill-fated s/c TA and Simon Pauperis’ in Dad’s TC powered J type chassis Milano. Townley and Gillet drove the same car in both events, but the prewar Js and F, a “TB” and another TC were Reg only. Georgie drove superbly, 10th fastest of the 49 entries and 4th fastest of the 10 MGs just 2 tenths of a second behind the blown (and soon to be blown up) TA. Her Practice 1: 27 was a creditable race pace and would have her ahead of 30% of our Lb competitors. Dad Bill managed to ruin her last of three events with poor car preparation, and she eventually forgave me, but in the other 2 she was smooth, quick and showing great race craft, several times rounding up other cars of similar pace on the outside of “cleavage” corner and leading them onto the main straight, some lengths adrift and too far behind to challenge again despite their straight line speed. Bob and I were delighted, and proud. But so smooth, and drawing spontaneous comment from several observers!
Our own Goup L races had 32 comers, so practice saw massive traffic. Held up badly, we qualified only 10th and 11th with Bob less than a tenth in front! Loving that, in any circumstance! Bob had a great weekend, running as high as 2nd for 7 of the 8 laps in the last race, before some over courteous driving (something you could never accuse Bill of) let the MacHealey and the “attached” Lola through. Great video footage from the car too. Bill was biffed off the track just after turn 1, lap 1, race 1 by a notorious weaver who eventually admitted his fault (after many groups of witnesses applied pressure) but that meant almost rear of field for the remaining scratch race. This did provide some entertainment for Bill, who started 24th and finished 13th, with great close dicing for the last few laps with the powerful Buckle GT, who got past briefly, and the nimble and well driven Mylon Morris. Excellent fun. Both lads came alongside during the cooldown lap and waved and gave a thumbs up. Awesome, emotional. The handicapping for event 2 was the worst job we’ve ever seen, but we both enjoyed the passing, our TCs finishing line astern less than a second apart. Schapelli Racing enjoyed the weekend and returned home unscathed and healthy. Always nice!
The non-MG accessible classes of cars are fantastic to watch too. Groups M & O with their Brabhams, Coopers, Lotuses (Loti?), Elfins, Renmaxes etc – the Group Ns with Cooper “S”s prevailing despite the best efforts of the Mustangs and Camaro (Winton is tight, suiting Minis and TCs, so a lot of the big V8s stay home) but the Toranas, EH Holdens, Escorts etc provide excellent racing too. The big V8 power often saw a Mustang lead lap 1 from the start, but the Minis buzz and bother until one, then two or more, are past. Our own Jason Armstrong is one of the best. Compliments to the few V8 boys – they drive well despite their heavy, unwieldy metal, and know they may be embarrassed, but those few still come. Groups Q and R, with more Elfins and Brabhams, March, Osella, Cheetah, Tiga, Ralt, Mallock and ASPs, (with our own Jim Doig to the fore) are also spectacular. Group F/Formular Ford have Reynards, Lola, Bowin, and Van Diemen in combat. Lots to see and at Winton you can see the entire lap.
Mention must be made of our Schapelli Racing “Transport Division” (their term). Terry Wright and son David, Trevor Driver and Reg O’Malley towed Bobby’s car over and gave much support (and advice), and many of our SA and interstate friends and supporters (including Secretary of the Meeting Bruce Maplestone and his lovely wife), Pearson etc dropped in to the garage, then partied with us at the awards dinner after. They love our SA wine! The social aspect and the nights closely rival the track time! So many stunning cars – an entry list of almost 300. The officials are fantastic, everyone is welcoming…

Several of our Club members came out to Mallala to watch the action including Russell Garth, Laurie Hough-ton, Warren Litchfield, Ian Hobbs, Tony Freckelton, Bob King and Laine Turner. Many of our local motorsport celebrities were also present including Clem Smith and Glen Dix. Glen was honoured during the lunch break, as all the officials and competitors lined the Start/Finish line to congratulate him on 60 glorious years of service to Motorsport. After demonstrating his well-known flag wave several times, Glen was then driven along the straight in Graham Stewart’s hot rod to the cheers of the crowd. It was a great acknowledgement for a lovely man who has given, and continues to give, so much support and entertain-ment to all of us over the years.
Saturday, a cool but fine day, saw some great historic racing. Bill and Bob Schapel in MGTC’s, Chris Hunt in his MGTD, Stan Ward in an MGB, Peter Goodale in an MGB together with Troy Ryan and Keirstie in their Oscar-modified Sprite, the awesome V8 powered Hillman Imp (yes I did say Hillman IMP!) and of course the Solar Depot van with the ladder on top, all ran well around the familiar circuit.
Sunday was a mixed weather day, some drizzle made it quite exciting and then the sun came out again. Although several cars did not return from Saturday’s running – various mechanical problems as usually beset historic cars both racing and road! But the racing was great to watch.
The highlight for me was the Handicap race in which Bill and Bob Schapel started at almost opposite ends of the grid, Bill being third and Bob at the end – Bob had won the previous races so the time handicap was quite substantial. As we watched, Bob slowly caught up and overtook each of the cars between him and the lead that had been taken by Bill by the third lap. Then the thrilling last lap with Bob in pursuit of Bill and the Schapel brothers came over the line in 1 - 2 formation with Bill in the lead!
Monday at Collingrove for the hill climb was very relaxed; all the remaining competitors had the opportunity to do 10 runs, which is a record for Collingrove for one day’s running. Lindsay Hick also joined us with his MGTC, accompanied by his pit crew of Alexander and James, with brother Stuart assisting.
From the results, it appears that our Victorian friends had a great time, and Peter Goodale finished first in the Regularity at Mallala, Stan Ward getting a first and Chris Hunt second in Regularity at Collingrove. All in all, a great weekend of historic motorsport
PHILIP ISLAND CLASSIC
Phillip Island Classic,

Several club members travelled again to Phillip Island for this year’s historic race meeting. Bob Schapel entered his supercharged TC special whilst Bill, who did not compete this year due to daughter Georgie’s approaching wedding, acted as pit crew. Additional support was provided, in varying degrees, by Anthony Pearson, Terry Wright and son David. This crew of five, the “Schappelli Racing” team, occupied a house in Cowes and dined noisily each evening along the outdoor restaurant strip in the town. Invariably, as each meal progressed, they were visited by even noisier fellow competitors whose activities appeared to have commenced much earlier.
Club members Troy Ryan, Glen Kirk and Peter Goodale also competed at the event this year, Troy racing his Sprite whilst Glen and Peter were entered in the regularity sections in their MGBs.
Accessibility to the pits and cars was, as always, remarkable, as visitors are actually encouraged to enter the garages and other areas to view proceedings from very close range indeed.
The track surface had undergone a $3m upgrade shortly before the historic event, and Bob Schapel found that his lap times were slower than previously, although he was holding his usual position relative to his fellow competitors. There was a stiff head wind on the main straight for some of the weekend and this of course could also have had an effect on times. Bob enjoyed a very successful week-end, receiving medals for class wins in three of his four races. He finished 8th, 9th, 7th and 9th overall in these races, having started at position 16 in race one.
Peter Goodale ran in the other section of regularity and enjoyed a trouble-free week-end. He started very well on Saturday, with a very creditable 2nd in his first run, and followed with positions of 9th, 6th and 13th thereafter.

Accommodation: Note change of venue since the last magazine: June Rushton from Vic has booked accommodation at the Eltham Motor Inn 1450 Main Road Eltham 3095, and arranged for trailer parking on a block of land next door to the motel.
The Eltham Motor Inn offers a compilation of suites as indicated below:
Standard Queen and Standard Suites are charged at a flat rate of $115 per room per night, based on a 3 night stay.
Deluxe spa suites, which are incorporated on a larger floor plan are priced at $145 per room per night based on a three night stay.
The Motel manager is Jessica Horan and she comes from a motor sport family which makes life easier. She has requested that all bookings should go directly to the Motel.

It's All About the Suspension
In February, we had the privilege of having Oscar Fioranotto as a guest speaker at a Motorsport Meeting at the Clubrooms. Oscar is a professional engineer who has worked with many racing teams on designing and setting up suspensions for racing, and spoke to our members on how they could improve their racing times by improving on the setting up of their shock absorbers.
He began his career driving a Formula Ford back in 1989, after which he studied Mechanical Engineering and Dynamics overseas.
Oscar’s extensive experience made the meeting very interesting to the forty plus in attendance , and our thanks to Alan Semmler for arranging our guest to speaker.
At the conclusion of this meeting, trophies were awarded to our Club Motorsport Class Winners for the 2012 season.
Motorkhana Series Round 1, Sunday March 10 2013
On Sunday 10 March the first round of the 2013 Motorkhana series was run at Big W Monarto on a fine and hot day. Despite the temperature reaching mid 30s there were no obvious (car) overheating issues and all the MGs ran faultlessly. Due to a number of other events on the same day numbers were down but a field of thirty three drivers, including eight Come & Try entries, came out to have a go. As this is the round run by the MGCC of SA it is usually the one that sees the most MG members compete. There were two MGBGTV8s, two MGFs, one MGB and one MGTD with a total of eight drivers and four other members in non-marque cars. Note class B results with places 2 to 7 taken by MGs! Tim and Kathy Groom came out in their lovely green rubber nose B to try their first ever motorkhana. Despite some early nerves they both acquitted themselves very well and it was great to see Kathy’s smile grow bigger as the day went on. I hope they’ll be back.
It was great to see the number of members who came out to help and to spectate on the day. Michelle Edwards, Chris Bray and Karen Stephenson did a great job taking entries while the course was set up by a team of volunteers including Laurie Houghton, Dave Beames, Craig Steele, Tyson Jeanes, John Davies, Hugh Webber, Curley, Peter Coulson, Wes Bray and Rob Peckett. Many of these members also managed the timing. Other visitors on the day included Rick Smith, Tony Freckelton and Chris Hunt.
Special thanks to all those who contributed to the set up and running of the event but particularly to Craig Steele for towing the trailer, Tim Edmonds as Clerk of Course and Bev Waters as overall organizer and lunch provider.

Following lunch, trophies were presented for the 2012 MSCA Super Sprint Series, and the highest award of ‘Sprint Champion’ for 2012 went to one of members, John Davies, driving a Mazda 6 throughout the Series. Congratulations on a great achievement.
Legend of the Lakes Hillclimb

Six MGCC members attended this magic hillclimb at Mt Gambier over the 9/10/11 of October, the event is run up the 1.4km road that is the access road to the “valley lakes”

Warren Litchfield MGB, Peter Mathwin MGBGTV8, Laurie Houghton MGBV8, Dave Anderson & Jane Vollebregt MGB, Jai Raymond Rover STIV8Warren Litchfield and I travelled down on Thursday arriving at the site at noon to set up our tents and were joined by Jane Vollebregt and Dave Anderson from the Victorian MGCC, (Jane co-droving Daves MGB ), if you arrive any later there is real trouble finding a suitable camp site for your cars.
Peter Mathwin (MGBGT V8 ) and Jai Raymond ( STI Rover )both rally drivers, were attending their first crack at the hill but were camped in a different area, Troy Ryan had entered his very quick Sprite for the Friday Historic event and his VW Caddy Van, complete with a ladder on top for the sat/Sun events.
The Friday competition is for Historic vehicles only with 61 entrants and we had 5 runs for the day, the Sat/Sun is open to all categories except open wheel cars, with 137 cars finishing the event, we had 5 runs on the Sat and 4 on the Sunday, the event finishes with a top 100 shootout where the fastest competitor takes the trophy.
The location of the pits and start point in the Valley Lake park is outstanding and if that is not enough, the view from the top of the climb where the cars are marshalled prior to returning back down the course, is spectacular looking out over the brown lake to Mt Gambier in the background.
The public have unfettered access to the pit area and are bussed down from the spectator area at the top of the hill on a regular basis throughout the 3 days of the event, Rob Hall and a couple of other club members at-tended as spectators and met up with us at our “garages”, the South East Auto Club has to be congratulated for their brilliant organisation as does the Mt Gambier City Council for their support in providing the venue and all the associated infrastructure.

Motorkhana Series Round 5, Sunday September 16 2012
Thank you to the Southern Districts Car Club and the officials for a great day and all MGCC members who came to compete, support and assist. The motorkhana series will begin again about early March 2013 and we hope to see some MGs competing.
Multi Club Hillclimb – Round 3 Sunday 9 September
Round three of the Collingrove Cup was run in superb weather conditions on 9 September at Collingrove. The sun was shining all day but the air was cool which seemed to provide ideal conditions for many drivers who reported personal bests on the day.
Karen managed to bog the Mirage in the outfield just before the finish line but still managed, on another run, close to her PB. Scott and Murray extracted more from the Civic with both into the 36s and Scott achieving a 36.43sec run against the class record of 36.41 which has stood since 1998! John and Rob both steadily improved their times over the day and John has broken the 36 second barrier at last. 35.99 seconds!
SA Hillclimb Championships – 13 & 14 October
The SA Hillclimb Championships were run at Collingrove on the weekend of 13 & 14 October to finish off the 2012 hillclimb season in superb weather conditions.
R egarded as one of the best historic racing events of the year, Winton has an amazing feel about it – spectators are able to see almost the whole circuit from a variety of vantage points plus have easy access to the pits. The smell of castor oil and the amazing sound of Norton, J.A.P. and Vincent engines coming from the mo-tor-cycle paddock adds to the experience. I will attempt to summarise the MG component though the huge Touring car and Sports car grids were packed with amazing vehicles also, providing fabulous racing all weekend.
The bitter cold and the rain on the Saturday morning led to amazingly slow qualifying times with a sump full of oil added around the whole circuit for good measure it was all but impassable. Fortunately the track improved as the oil floated away and the rain eased, so the afternoon races were on a more predictable surface and Sunday was fine and sunny.
There were over 30 MGs competing, with eight TC specials entered in our Lb races, seven of them supercharged with Bill’s red TC the only normally aspirated car. Both Schapel boys seem to enjoy the lack of traction – Lanac Park experience to the fore, I suspect – and qualified 1st and 6th outright in a field of 36 cars, which was a good start to a very successful weekend. Bob earned two outright 2nd places (both class wins) in the scratch races after leading both events but then losing first place to different cars – a repeat of last year. In the first it was the powerful 2.5 litre Prad 3 open-wheeler which took his lead after two laps, in the second it was the gorgeous and quick Penrite Lola Climax, driven hard by Ken Bedggood, as Samantha Diamond was off having babies. Bill was next TC and managed a class 3rd and a 4th and enjoyed close dicing with Eddie Wood in the Elfin Streamliner and various Buckles, Auscas and Coopers. Both Schapelli cars performed faultlessly all weekend, though Bobby noticed his supercharger boost was down a little. Other TCs included Terry White’s, Syd Reinhart (in the ex- SA Blanden TC),
Brian Parkinson, Chris Farrell and Richard Townley’s famous Patterson-Brydon car.
Group J&K (pre-war) class had 3 blown MGs competing – John Gillet’s ex-Bira, ex-Brady K3, Murdoch’s TB and Pat Ryan’s potent but often unre-liable supercharged TA which ran at great speed between stints of being towed around he pits sounding like a fireworks display. Lots of compression and massive boost makes for an inter-esting life.
The group S races had 10 MGs plus Troy Ryan’s amazing Sprite – an MGA, 2 Midgets, 4 V8 and 4 4cylinder MGBs. Matt Baragwanath drove Paul Trevethan’s potent V8, with Troy Ryan’s Sprite, Weston’s Midget, Ste-venson’s 4 cylinder B, then Wood and Rose-mary Trevethan’s V8s next fastest of the MG/Spridget crew. All among a 30+ mass of interesting cars – includ-ing 2 Panteras, a TVR, a few big Healeys, more Sprites including a few bug-eyes, Porsches and Triumphs. South Aussie
Rod Carey was making a welcome return to the track after decades away in his Spitfire and had a ball. The racing was fast and furious at the front, with Matt’s BV8, one of the Panteras and Troy’s amazing Sprite fighting for top spot. Troy was rapt to beat the De-Tomaso home for 2nd behind the BV8 in the final race.
In Regularity One Georgie Schapel was enjoying the red TC she shares with Dad, posting great times despite un-cooperative slower traffic. This forced some useful practice of good racing techniques, like diving up the inside into corners, or passing around the outside of turns in the esses. She posted an amazing time on her last lap on Sunday to improve by 6 sec-onds on her PB from last year, a mas-sive leap. Her lap time would have put her ahead of two supercharged TCs in our Lb races! I think it’s time to get the full licence and start racing, Geo. Also in the regularity events with Georgie and the K3 were a J2, a J3, an L type plus several TCs and the s/c TA.
The 2 Touring car fields included Cortinas, EH Holdens, Mustangs, and over a dozen Mini Coopers in a huge Group Na Nb field, while Nc had Es-corts, Alfas, Datsun, BMW, Mazda, Torana, Valiant, Falcon GTHO and more Mustangs! Motor Bike and Side-car races too were fabulous. Great noises, great racing! Winton is a mar-vellous experience. Chris Kinney and John Bray towed Bob’s TC over and had a ball, as did Anthony Pearson and friends, Anthony there to set up his Classic and Vintage bulb stall.
After returning home, while checking over his TC Bob noticed his super-charger mounting bolts, very tight be-fore the weekend, were loose, a func-tion of the fierce resonant vibrations. You may remember last year the bracket had broken, and he had led but finished 2nd in both scratch races then! A new and better designed blower bracket, with rubber to hope-fully absorb those vibrations, has now been fitted. Next year, look out!
SUPALOC CLASSIC TARGA REPORT

Along with a number of other car clubs we were invited to participate in the Targa event by entering 12 cars to take part in the Shannons Tour Section. This entitled us to display our Tour cars in the Goyder Pavillion at the Wayville Showgrounds with all the Competition cars on the Wednesday Prologue evening on the 22nd of August which would also entitle us to 2
A further 11 cars were displayed in a static display in the atrium adjacent to the Goyder Pavilion
We returned to Wayville to join a few of our members, the rest had either gone home or adjourned to a pub, speaking to those who also returned I gather everyone had a fabulous time
A number of our Tour cars went up to visit Clem Smiths Auto Museum at Mallala as part of the Sunday Break- fast run and then returned to Adelaide for the finish parade in Gouger Street

Up at 6.00am so as to be at our meeting point at 7.45am at the bottom of Ansteys Hill – All MG’ers in good spirits.
Another wet and windy day, but overall turned out better than Thursday. Hey, no Supaloc Lambo ???!! The highlight of the day was Karin Caffin’s Birthday who celebrated with us in somewhat trying conditions, thank you Karin. The day was unfortunately marred by the fatal accident during the Coromandel Stage, our thoughts are with the immediate family and friends, and lets not forget the co-driver.
Scott Bottom in Reverse – we were greeted by cold, but lovely weather, with 2 extra people at our Finish Control meant a lot less pressure on the rest of the team. With a few days experience under our belts we became more like old hands at our various tasks. One of the days highlights was seeing our fellow MG Club Mem- bers in their various model MG’s, and a delight to see their ‘smiling faces. Once the Stage was reopened we un-taped and headed to the local oval for a “thankyou” BBQ where Mike Hardy from Tasmania thanked us all for our efforts and invited us to participate in any of the other future Targa Events.
Those of us available were invited to act as back-up personnel for the Coromandel Stage which was sub- sequently cancelled as a mark of respect.

Another lovely morning at Mallala – cool and cloudy – looks like we are in for a good day of sprinting. But what’s this – our beloved Shed 47 is all locked up! After some negotiations by Laurie we set up in the shed next door and share with the dreaded Jaguar team. A few moans as the Yellow Submarine (Big Yellow Taxi, Yellow Brick….) rumbles in. Could you please repeat your comment Michael?
Off to the driver’s briefing and after the usual jocularity we were given a “concrete guarantee” that one car in particular would not drop oil around the track again. Only about 70 entries for the day which is down considerably on the usual 100 but meant we would get in 5 sessions.
With only 4 groups we got in 3 sessions each before lunch which must be a record. All went fairly smoothly and Michael did repeat his comments – he’s not happy!
The most important news of the day were the 4 PB’s that I know of and not the 1935 variety but “Personal Bests”:-
I did hear some admissions of a couple of “offs” and maybe a 360 but all in all a great day. Michael is putting in a request to Clem to smooth out turns 1 & 2 – why not just go straight across?
Thanks to the following members who turned up to give moral support, it is much appreciated:- Jeff …. who drove 200kms from Port Moorowie (ex Formula Vee racer), Mike Greenwood, Tony Freckleton and Rob Hall.
A cold beer at the Mallala pub, a bit of bullsh*t on how well we went and commiserations to Warren and hopefully we will do it all again on 12th August.
Winter Cup 3 Hillclimb
Scruitineering was done where you were parked and the event got under-way pretty well on time.
Stan Ward was in a class of his own so obviously didn’t have any opposition, Troy Ryan turned up just as the drivers briefing was about to start, he had originally entered his little work van but I understand something went wrong so he arrived with his A/H Sprite on its trailer behind his Rover P4 “Cyclops” he did a couple of runs, put in a brilliant time then packed up and went home.
Considering it was cold and the track was not conducive to fast times, unless you have a 4WD Turbo, I think everyone had had enough after 7 runs so all in all it was a reasonable day.
HILLCLIMB REPORT – 24th June 2012 – Geraldine Hough
MSCA Super Sprint Round 2 Mallala 17th June 2012
Round 2 of the MSCA Super Sprint series was held at Mallala on Sunday 17th June 2012.
Laurie Houghton was overall fastest on the day with some very impressive times and a PB of 1:23.76. Other MG competitors in their respective MG B’s were Warren Litchfield who had trouble free running this event, Nick Phillips and Rob Peckett.
In the non Marque class John Davies also had a PB in the Mazda 6, Craig Ruediger in the big Ford XA GT had some very good consistent times and continues to explore the boundaries of adhesion at turn 1. Club member Michael Bugg had his first MSCA run in his Mazda MX5 and put in some excellent laps. He didn’t even remove his spare tyre and street directory for the event so there may be some improvement to come and we hope to see him again.
Other club members present on the day were Wayne Hough, Arthur Ruediger, Steve Bowra and Hugh Webber.

Held at Serafino Wines at McLaren Vale, and thanks to the efforts of our members present, I am pleased to announce that the MG Car Club took out the best club display. The perpetual trophy now resides at our clubrooms. Although a different venue from past years and we were unsure what to expect, it was a pleasant setting with plenty of shade from the tall gum trees for those that wanted it.

Motorkhana March 11 Held at Big W Distribution Center at Monarto, and organized by the MG Car Club.
With some our regulars missing due to Phillip Island Historic Racing, and also be-ing a long week-end, we still man-aged a reason-able turnout from our club, especially with our volunteers.
Chris Bray & Karen Stephenson found themselves bombarded taking entries early in the day (53 in all), with ten ‘first time entrants’, which is very pleasing for the sport. Many were young people from the street cruisers and drifters clubs, and they put on quite a spectacle for the observers. (The tyre manufacturers would be rubbing their hands together no doubt.)

There was some interesting competition between the Stephenson ‘lads’ as per usual, trying to be ‘top gun’ of the family, with less than two seconds separating them for their total time on the day.
NEW RULING ON FIRE EXTINGUISHERS for MOTORSPORT SPEED EVENTS (Including Super Sprints & Hillclimbs)
All extinguishers must be tested/replaced every three years,
and the scrutineers at events are checking the dates on the extinguishers.
ROLL FRAMES for open cars for MSCA Super Sprints
At the recent MSCA meeting held Monday night, it appears that MSCA may be enforcing Roll Bars in open top cars for 2012 Super Sprints. Please read the sup regs when they become available to see if and/or what is required. I realize that this will possibly exclude a few of our members who are not prepared to make alterations to their cars.
For the MG Club Challenge in June, it is planned that Roll Frames will be recommended, but not mandatory.
2011 Motorsport Review
Another year has passed quickly, and our Club motorsport activities have come to an end for 2011.
We have had another great group of people competing in Motorsport this year, with over forty different competitors taking part at a variety of events. With additional attendance of partners, Volunteers and other club spectators, it has swelled the club member attendance to motorsport events close to the one hundred mark for the year.
The use of Shed 47 at Mallala for our club members is much appreciated and creates an area for everyone to congregate and socialize between runs, not to mention some shelter from the elements what ever it may be.I would sincerely like to thank all the volunteers that have helped out at events during the year. Without your assistance, the events could not be run, and everyone taking part really appreciate your efforts. Thank you.
I would also like to express my gratitude to my Motor Sport Assistant Secretary, Murray Stephenson (his first year on the committee), and who has been an enormous help to me throughout the year. Laurie Houghton and Murray have also helped me out with reports for the Magazine and Monthly meetings when needed, and this too has been very much appreciated.
Thanks also to Ian Curwen-Walker & Tim Edmonds who has helped out with CAMS matters and reports. The 2012 Motorsport calendar has been drafted and is attached, there are also other events that don’t qualify for Championship points that may be of interest to members next year. There are 16 ** (2 star events) which qualify for Club Competition Championship points, the competitors best 10 results will count towards the Championship. Confirmation will also be sent out to my email list of members who wish to be kept updated with Club Motorsport activities. The MG Club Challenge is back in South Australia next year on the June Long Weekend, and it has recently been confirmed that we have the use of the Mallala Circuit on Sat 9th June & Collingrove Hillclimb on Sunday 10th June. We can now start planning the event in earnest, and we will be looking for as many volunteers as possible for these events to help run them.
So get some rest, enjoy the Christmas Break, check your cars, & we will be back again for our first club event on Sunday February 26th for the Social MSCA picnic, display and presentation day, (Venue yet to be confirmed).
This will be followed by our first competition event ** Motorkhana on 11th March 2012 at Monato which our club will be organizing. It will also be a great event to practice your skills if intending to go to the MG National Meeting in Hobart at Easter.
