December 2023 Library News

I’m delighted to report on a major new acquisition for the Club’s library, ‘Kim – A Biography of M.G. Founder Cecil Kimber’ by Jon Presnell (and the full stops after M and G are in the book’s title). It is newly published to commemorate MG’s centenary and I am sure it will prove to be hugely popular. This is a highly impressive tome of 536 pages with 750 images (weighing more than 3kg) and was a significant expense but well worth it – so with respect, it won’t be on loan until I’ve arranged to have it covered.

To whet your appetite. The blurb on the back cover describes Kim ‘within a few years . . . (building) MG into the leading European manufacturer of sports cars, with an impressive record of competition successes’. The book describes the ‘venomous’ politics of MG’s parent company, with Kim about to bounce back into the fray when he lost his life in a needless accident. It goes on: ‘Respected businessman, wayward husband, fallible parent – Cecil Kimber was a man of surprising contrasts. Here for the first time is the colourful story of the man behind those famous initials’.

Jon Presnell is an automotive historian with a reputation for scrupulous research who writes for Classic & Sports Car magazine.

I’ve had a quick look through the book and I think it’s one of the most impressive volumes in our whole library. I will let you know via the website and/or magazine when it has been protectively covered and available to borrow, and if there are any special conditions.

Thanks – and happy reading!
Cheers!

ABOUT THE CLUB LIBRARY

The library is a great resource of the club, with more than 400 books plus magazines, journals, DVDs and videos – all related in one way or another to cars with an obvious emphasis on MGs. These are available for members to borrow at no charge, with a nominal borrowing period of 4-6 weeks. There are also general interest books on the history of cars and racing and many volumes of how-to advice.
These are all listed in the catalogues available below. There are two versions, one by title, one by author, for easy reference.
Many members donate books to the library and this is always welcome, but before donating please check the catalogue to ensure we don’t already have a copy. If you hear of a book you’d like to see added to the collection please let me know so I can get the process underway.
