THE 25TH RUNNING OF THE AUSTRALIAN ANNUAL KIMBER RUN – PLUS TURNING BACK THE CLOCK A BIT
By the time that this edition of the Kimber Run is received by you, time will be slipping away so you need to finalise that application form.
Since 1996 the MG Car Club SA has been offering this; some say , premium event, where the MG’s have been to so many towns all starting in or near the centre of the City of Adelaide with I think the longest possibly being to Barmera in 2006 or was it to Burra in 2003 I don’t know, but I do vividly remember hearing the Brady K3 blasting past me and I am sure there are a number of you who have had the same experience! What a wonderful sound. The 2009 run to Balaklava was a real challenge in 43 degree heat and all deserved a medal! Seeing the luncheon meal was a roast lamb or roast pork – a number of very stressed looking people that day and all who started got home again despite the heat.
As you know this run is open to all owners, drivers and navigators of the cherished marque. No matter the model or colour, all are welcome and you do not need to be members of the organising MG Car Club of SA., So tell your MG friends that they are all very welcome.
I didn’t do the first event but Ian Denny very kindly send me a copy of the first report which I report below.
This particular trip to Mannum is a recreation of the very first time that this event set off from admittedly a different start point ( the Civic Park in TTG) but it generally followed some similar roads for the lunch in Mannum but then they turned around and drove back to the Adelaide Parklands via Murray bridge, Callington , Strathlbyn, Mount Lofty and down Greenhill Road. Being a lot younger the members then proceeded to have a party where 215 attended the Club’s 40th Anniverary with the Late Jack Scott’s Jazz Band playing, Quite a long day Eh!
As part of this first event the MG Car Club SA were granted the UK Club’s “Bromsgrove Cup” in appreciation of having done the most to foster the name of Cecil Kimber- Quite an honour! And we still do honour his name today.
Incidentally the cars were flagged of by the initial organizer of the even, Brian Ballard and Patron Jeremy Cordeaux , and the first car away was driven by our very own Bev Waters who was the then President.
Don’t forget you will be able to say: I DID THE RUN IN 21
