Breakfast Run to Younghusband
25th October 2020
By Steve Spong, John Roach & David McNabb
We woke up to a rainy start to the day, but a quick look at the weather radar showed that east of the Hills it was going to be dry, and it was. The rains soon cleared as we made our way on our annual pilgrimage to the Foweraker’s riverside place at Younghusband.
In fact Andy Morgan and Chris Hunt were both game enough to do the whole trip with their tops down. Then whilst following Chris, David & Kerry wondered why he was not going quite as briskly as he would normally. Anyway, it turned out the car had begun to run on three, so on arrival at the Foweraker’s a small team involving Graham, Terry and Andy were able to track down an errant plug lead on No.3 cylinder that had cooked a plug. The 3 Musketeers were all able to help effect repairs which had a relieved Chris being able to motor home, much more briskly, on all four cylinders! So all’s well that ends well.
The route took the freeway for a quick exit from town. Then it was along the Old Princes Highway through Nairne, Kanmantoo and past Monarto into Murray Bridge. Thereafter it was just a case of following the river north towards Mannum and then off to Younghusband.
The rest of the morning was spent sitting around, chatting and watching the world go slowly by on the river, which was very full and looked great.
It was also good to see Phil Smith being very active on his “two” new knees, and for both of Berry’s dogs it was a nice trip into the country.
Then Alan & Ros fired up the BBQ. They cooked a mountain of snags and onions, and as everyone had bought a small salad or cakes for dessert, we all enjoyed a big lunchtime sausage sizzle.
In talking to Alan & Ros about the area; they suggested we take a drive further along their East Front Road and continue on a scenic drive past the old Younghusband Store. So a few of us took that way home.
The road follows the river closely for some time and then climbs to the top of the cliffs at Teal Flat and so provides a panoramic lookout. It is a spot well worth seeking out as it provides terrific views along the river, of its extensive back waters, and of the very large and impressive riverside properties opposite. The road itself then loops back to Mannum.
So once again our big thanks to Ros and Alan for their hospitality and generosity. They have even asked us to lock in the last Sunday in October 2021 to do it all again! So thank you and yes we will!
